The biggest jackpot of the year was $1.337 billion that was won on July 29th by a single ticket in Illinois. The win was the biggest in the state’s history, the second biggest in the history of Mega Millions and the third biggest ever at the time. It was claimed by an anonymous partnership that took the cash option of $780.5 million which is the third biggest ever cash win in lottery history.

The five most common numbers for Mega Millions in 2022 were 7-8-16-38-64 and Mega Ball 24, whilst 10-12-49-62-65 and Mega Ball 5 were the ones selected the fewest times. In each draw every number has the same chance of being chosen as any others, so its odd to see such a big difference between the most and least common numbers over the space of a year!

Of the 47 states and jurisdictions that play Mega Millions, it was California that came out as the biggest winner of the year. In total 12,525,885 winning tickets were sold in California across the year, including the jackpot winning ticket of $421 million on January 28th. If you live in the U.S Virgin Islands then unfortunately you take the title as the least successful territory for the year. 28,771 winners came from the Islands, a whopping 12,497,114 less than the most sucessful state of California.

When you think of Mega Millions you almost always think of Powerball as well, and both these two lotteries set their own benchmarks this year. Powerball set the biggest jackpot of all time to Mega Millions setting the fourth biggest, but Mega Millions had seven jackpot winners to Powerball’s six. All of this despite Powerball having three draws a week to Mega Millions having two. With the extra draw could Mega Millions have possibly equalled the biggest jackpot of all time? Who knows!

There have been three jackpots over $1 billion in the last four years from Mega Millions, so the odds suggest there will be another one in 2023. So keep your eyes out and get entered when you can, as you cant win the lottery without buying a ticket!
