History of the Arizona Lottery
The Copper State is home to a fantastic lottery with a very interesting history behind it. With a varied portfolio of games, players will be sure to find the draw game or instant win game that's perfect for them.
The Arizona Lottery was established in November 1980 and was the first U.S. state west of the Mississippi River to approve and enact a state lottery. State residents are asked to vote on whether or not they want the lottery to continue operating, and the organization is set to keep offering great games and big prizes to players from Apache Junction to Yuma until at least 2035.
Originally, the minimum age for buying Arizona Lottery tickets was 18, but this was raised to 21 in 2003. The Arizona Lottery began selling tickets for Powerball on April 4th, 1994 and started participating in Mega Millions on April 18th, 2010. There have been 12 Powerball jackpot winners from Arizona.
Drawings for all in-state games are held at the Arizona Lottery Phoenix Office. Drawings for Powerball and Mega Millions take place in Iowa and are conducted by the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL).
Revenue raised from Arizona Lottery ticket sales is allocated to four categories of programs: health and welfare, economic and business development, education, and the environment. Since 1982, over $3.3 billion has been raised for initiatives in these categories.
