History of the Oklahoma Lottery
The Oklahoma Lottery was established in November 2004 in order to support educational initiatives in the state from kindergarten to college. Powerball tickets went on sale for the first time in January 2006 and the Oklahoma Lottery joined Mega Millions in January 2010.
Over $652 million has been raised for education since 2004 thanks to Oklahoma residents buying tickets for the chance to fund dreams of their own. Out of the money allocated to education, 45 percent is given to K-12 programs, 39.5 percent is distributed to higher education programs such as grants and scholarships, 5 percent is dedicated to funding teachers' retirement funds, another 5 percent is given to the School Consolidation and Assistance Fund and 5.5 percent helps cover the cost of educational equipment upgrades and scholarships through the CareerTech program.
The state joined the popular Lucky for Life game in February 2018.
